Originally, lamps could be carried or hung from ceilings singly or in clusters. The pendant hanging lamps were originally hanging clay fat lamps as well as suspended clay oil lamps that were soon followed by vase lamps. Modern day hanging lamps can be shaped into different forms and. may remind us strongly of the past or be simple and futuristic creations.

Popular Designs Include The Crucifixion

In the intricate arabesques of flowers and foliage that fill empty spaces one can find simple and elegant designs beautifully created to give off more than just good lighting; but, also lends a touch of class to the hanging lamp. A popular design used in many such lighting unit is that of the Crucifixion that may also have identifying inscriptions. It is not unusual to find saints or eagles surmounting a medallion along with the Virgin to lend both religious as well as visions of power to the decoration of the hanging lamp.

The modern hanging lamp can also very often be found hanging above a pool table and provides all the illumination necessary for players at the table. These inexpensive ceiling fixtures can have many designs on them and, help in providing all the necessary illumination as well as functionality required by players while enjoying their game of pool.

In any case, one is able to add elegance to a room using a hanging lamp that, if handcrafted, will help to create a more authentic look. It may be adorned with plastic beads hanging from below the unit and, have different pieces of glass in many shades to throw off many colored lights into the room. There are many possibilities as far as the design of a hanging lamp is concerned.

Hanging lamps are certainly able to remind one of the Victorian Era and, modern versions usually depict Old English lamp décor and, have different finishes that are reminiscent of those past years. One can choose to have Imperial Bronzes or Marcado blacks or even aged copper for design and, the wealth of natural charm contained in these pieces, will certainly add an extra allure to the immediate surroundings.

Hanging lamps may also be used outdoors with promising lantern designs that enhance the exteriors and, are especially useful when used to light up the front porch by inducing a sense of nostalgia of past eras. The hanging lamp makes a home brighter and, can also be used to good effect in offices and, there are many different appealing designs available for use in either space.

Projector lamps change the way we view television, movies or even presentations. We use projector lamps to project an image onto a screen, usually a much bigger screen than you would have on a normal TV. For this reason, people who have ever watched anything using a projector lamp have a hard time going back to watching a normal television set.

At The Movies

A projector lamp is what they use at the theater when you go to see that new release. Using the projector lamp, you can project the image from the projector onto a very large screen for an entire theater to view. Can you imagine an entire theater full of people trying to view something on a normal sized television set? Even a large television set wouldn’t be adequate and it’s pretty fair to say that many people would want their money back after paying a ticket to see what they came to see. A projection lamp allows all of those people to view the same thing, creating a unique, yet similar, experience for everyone.

At Home

Projector lamps aren’t just used at the movie theater, either. They can be used at home, too. Many people have projection screen televisions. They are used to create home theaters. The projection lamps are usually projected from the ceiling onto a large screen. This makes the television or movie watching experience so much better.

For Business

You can also use projection lamps for business purposes. Simply hook up a projector lamp to your laptop computer and you can project Powerpoint presentations, movies, documents or whatever else you wish, to an entire board room of company employees or executives.

Search The Internet

If you wish to improve your viewing experience, be it for television, movies, business purposes or whatever else you wish to view, projector lamps are the way to go. You can find projector lamps in any electronics store or you can use the internet. These days, you can find pretty much anything you wish on the internet. You can either buy straight from a retailer or you can use internet auction sites, such as Ebay, where you can bid on different projector lamps and, if you win, you can potentially get whatever you’re looking for at pennies on the dollar. What could be better than that? Get yourself a projector lamp today and see what you’ve been missing.

When you are organizing your space, be it your living or working space, you should give a lot of thought as to where you are going to place your lamps. The position of your lamps can easily alter the way you feel about your room. The correct position can improve productivity and mood and the correct position can even make your room look a certain way, bigger for instance.

Electrical Outlets

People usually position their lamps wherever there’s an outlet close by. However, you don’t have to be hindered by correct lighting just because the cord won’t reach. That’s why they invented extension cords. There are many ways to hide extension cords so that you can position your lamps any way you want. You can, for instance, place rugs over them, run them under base boards or even place them underneath the carpeting if you have the know how. With just a little creativity, you can place your lamps however you want and still have room for other electronics, such as a computer or a TV.

When you are positioning your lamps, make sure you try them out in different locations before you go to all the trouble of hiding extension cords. Place them in an area that you think will benefit you the most and emulate doing whatever activity you plan on doing in that room. You may find that what you planned in your head doesn’t work very well in real life. Play around with your lamps and find the best positions so that they work for you and aren’t just a nuisance.

When finding the right position for your lamps, you want to keep a lookout for too much glare, too much shade caused by objects between you and the lamps as well as too much distance; a lamp does no good if it’s on the complete opposite side of the room and you’re trying to read or write something.

Just use your imagination, try different scenarios and then start laying the hiding of the extension cords because you just found the perfect positions for your lamps. You’d be amazed at the increase in productivity and mood you can experience just by changing the position of a particular light source a few inches or feet. Just remember, when it comes to rooms, there can never be too many lamps.

Oil lamps have been a part of human life since earliest times and have lit our way through most of history. Even today they are still used in many parts of the world and many have retained their simplest form. It is quite probable that the first oil lamp was nothing more than a small crude clay vessel or bowl made to hold tallow or some form of plant oil and a wick made of reed.

In early times man most likely went to bed with the setting sun or made do with the glowing light from his fire but archeological finds show that prehistoric man used some form of oil lamp 20,000 years ago and in the fifteenth century Leonardo Da Vinci was the first to enclose the flame in a glass chimney which helped to protect the flame from drafts and eliminate the flicker.

The Early Oil Lamp

Before the Revolutionary War, the primitive open oil lamps and rush lights were still in use. The rush light consisted of a reed held upright in a dish containing grease. These primitive forms of oil lamps remained in use as late as the Civil War. In 1784, Ami Argand invented an oil lamp which drastically changed and improved the path of lighting forever. It had a reservoir that held oil and a flat wick that burned on both the inner and outer surfaces.

As air rose up through the center, oxygen consumed most of the carbon while providing a stronger and brighter light with less smoke and little flicker. Later that same year a Frenchman added a glass chimney to Argand’s invention, creating a draft, thus greatly intensifying the amount of artificial light.

In 1879, with Thomas Edison’s improvements to the light bulb, lighting the night was forever changed.

Still Lighting The Way

Today many of these early oil lamps still exist as antique collectibles or even remain in use in remote areas where no electric lines reach. Some people still keep an oil lamp handy in case of power outages and you can find modern functional versions of the oil lamp that serve as decorative accent pieces or burn scented oils.
It’s easy to see that the humble oil lamp has a very long and interesting history. It may have been the invention of the wheel that started man on his journey to modern times but it was the oil lamp that lit his way.

For over a century the Tiffany lamp has been a key feature in home décor and Louis Comfort Tiffany could never have imagined that the Tiffany lamp would become his most famous and enduring contribution to art and home décor. Born the son of a famous New York jeweler in 1848, Tiffany was a major creative influence in the Art Nouveau movement.

Today there are three basic types of Tiffany lamps: Tiffany originals, Tiffany lamp reproductions, and lamps or fixtures made in the Tiffany style. Whether you hope to someday own an original Tiffany lamp, purchasing an antique reproduction or would be just as happy with a Tiffany inspired lamp, it is important to know the difference.

What’s In A Name?
The only original tiffany lamps were created by Tiffany Studios in New York City by Tiffany and his group of artisans. Today original Tiffany lamps are found only in museums and individual collections. A Tiffany lamp sold for over two million dollars at Christies Auction House in 1997.
Almost all “Tiffany” Lamps and fixtures that you might see are not real Tiffany but actually reproductions and you have to keep in mind that you are purchasing a Tiffany inspired lamp that reproduces the original designs, or new designs that are Tiffany inspired but not the real thing. Today when we hear the term Tiffany, it most often applies to the style and not an actual Tiffany piece. An authentic Tiffany lamp reproduction will use the same pattern and color scheme as the original.

Many companies that work under the Tiffany name are creating exacting reproductions of the original Tiffany designs, even down to including a signature and this confuses many consumers into thinking they are getting the real thing.

Tiffany Style
A Tiffany style lamp, on the other hand is a blanket term often used to describe anything with a stained glass shade. While there are the producers of quality lamps crafted in the Louis Tiffany tradition, cheap imitation Tiffany style lamps can have loose fitting glass pieces or may not be glass at all but a stained glass like plastic shade.
Most of us may not be able to afford an authentic Tiffany lamp, but whether you are looking for the real thing or just appreciate the beautiful style there is almost certainly something to fit your budget, making it easy to have your own bit of Tiffany.

The best thing about a crystal lamp is the various shapes and sizes in which they are available as well as the decorative value they can add to the home. Whether your décor calls for tall and slender or short and rounded there will be a crystal lamp that can fit your decorations.

For small tables adding an urn-shaped crystal lamp can add a touch of class toy our room or they can be used as a small night light or accent lamp to your room. The shapes and sizes in which they are available are limited only by your imagination. The unique make-up of a crystal lamp can also diffuse the lighting to create unique shadows on your wall and add to the room’s ambience.

A crystal lamp will also reflect light from within as with a crystal ball in the center of a candlestick lamp with a bulb in the top under a shade and a smaller bulb encased in crystal which is diffused and spread throughout the room. They can be used as individual lighting sources or together to create a brilliant light when needed.
Crystal Presents Look Of Elegance

Regardless of your décor, a crystal lamp adds a touch of elegance to your room and small, hanging crystals in the shape of teardrops are popular among lamp embellishments. They also reflect the lighting and can cast unique bits of light into a room. Table lamps or floor lamps made of chrome and crystal really enhance a room’s rich appearance.

Crystal can be engraved or shaped into designs to fit your imagination and can be purchased in grades anywhere from under $50 to several thousands of dollars depending on the size and design of the crystal. It can be made of leaded crystal or even natural salt crystal to add to the beauty and value of your crystal lamp.

Natural crystal also comes in natural shades ranging from clear to tangerine in color, which can also add to the beauty of your crystal lamp to better fit into your décor and overall effects of your room. Hollowed crystal, in an off white with a small internal light source can add to conversation by your guests in addition to being a functional piece of decorative furniture.

Reading lamps are meant for exactly what they insinuate: reading but, there are so many types that at times it is very hard to choose one that will fit the right place and serve the purpose precisely. Here are a few guidelines that I hope will help you next time you are looking for a reading lamp.

A Reading Lamp To Match Every Décor

There are many types of reading lamps and the first thing you need to consider when purchasing it is in which room in the house is going to be placed as according to that décor and furniture you will be able to choose one easier, for example, if you are looking for a reading lamp for the drawing room to place it next to the sofa set or chair, you may want to search for tall standing lamps with elegant shades in order to add to the ambiance and décor.

In the study room, if the furniture is composed of massive wood, you may want to choose a table reading lamp, with a wood or brass leg; for the office you may consider a less fancy reading lamp that is flexible and if possible made of unbreakable material as accidents happen all the time in an office with over crowded work tables.

The Right Power To Suit Your Eye Sight

Reading lamps are basically meant for one purpose and that is to help you see and read better but not too bright as you may face the possibility of hurting your eyes with too much glare from it; a 40 to 60 watts should do the job just great.

However, if you are not using your reading lamp for reading purposes, as it happens at times especially in the bedroom where at times they are used to enhance the décor and/or provide a night light, you can then use the power of choice for the bulb depending in its use.

Shopping For Reading Lamps

The best way to shop for reading lamps is in retails stores and not online as you can see the actual size of it, color, shape and material that is made of especially if you are purchasing it for decoration purposes. Many people shop online because they can avail some fabulous bargains however, don’t forget the shipping costs which at times turn out to be even more then the cost of the product besides there is always the possibility of getting damaged in shipping and handling.

In addition, there were many accessories that adorned the piano to enhance that stylish appearance. One such accessory was a candelabra. Eventually, the candelabra gave way to something more practical and yet its role helped to maintain that tasteful look. That replacement is the piano lamp.

Purpose Of A Piano Lamp

A piano represents creativity, musical mastery and romance. Also, added into the mix is a touch of genius. One of the functions of a stylish piano lamp is to enhance the mystique associated with a piano. Therefore, a quality piano lamp will be very classic looking in its design. Generally, this design is reflected in the material used to construct the piano lamp in addition to the lines and features of the lamp.

In addition to the aesthetics offered by a stylish piano lamp is its practical purpose. This practical purpose is to provide light for the artist in the performance and practice of their music. A quality piano lamp will illuminate the sheet music and keyboard and yet be structured so that the light does not affect the vision of the pianist.

Style And Features

When selecting that perfect piano lamp, there are a number of considerations to keep in mind. Those considerations include the materials used to construct the lamp, the adjustment features and the size of the hood used for shading.

When selecting the appropriate material, used for the construction of the piano lamp, you may wish to go with an enameled metal. These metals could include brass or chrome and will add to the elegance of the atmosphere that you’re wishing to create. In addition, the weight of the metal will insure that the piano lamp rests solidly on the piano. Also, a properly weighted base adds to the stability of the lamp and can prevent the lamp from becoming unstable regardless of what position the adjustable arm may be placed.

Those adjustment features, found on the arm of some piano lamps, will allow for the light to be raised or lowered according to the preference of the musician. In addition, the light, through an expanding arm, can be extended or retracted. An important aspect of a piano lamp is the inclusion of a counter-weighted arm. This feature will also help to prevent the lamp from getting top heavy regardless of its positional setting.

The size of the hood used to direct the lighting is also important. The hood should be of the right length and width to insure that the music score and keyboard are properly illuminated. In addition, the hood should be well constructed and properly shield the musician’s eyes. This will greatly reduce any possible strain placed on the eyes which in turn may affect the practice and performance of the pianist.

Also, another key factor in selecting a piano lamp is wattage. Typically, a piano lamp can lodge one or two light bulbs. However, the recommended wattage limitation of the light bulb sockets should be the use of 40 watt light bulbs or less per socket.

As a means to provide safety and security while saving energy costs, the motion lamp fills many lighting voids for businesses and residential areas. Designed to turn on a light when motion is detected, a motion lamp can also be a distraction for some.

As a safety measure, a motion lamp can be installed in areas around the home where traffic is minimal and the use of constantly burning light, especially outdoors at night, would be waste of electricity and possibly an annoyance if it shines through windows. However, if you need to travel that area after dark, having a light automatically come on can prevent tripping over unseen obstacles.

For security purposes, a motion lamp can be a deterrent to crime as a would-be burglar sneaking into an area of your yard may be frightened off when a light suddenly comes on lighting the doorway they have been attempting to enter. Care must be taken when installing and setting up a motion lamp, however as small animals may also cause the light to activate giving you false alerts of an intruder. Most motion lamps have sensitivity adjustments to compensate for this erroneous activation.

Indoor Use Can Save Electric Costs

Another use for a motion lamp can be indoors, in rooms where some people typically forget to turn off a light when they leave the room. One such place may be the bathroom where a motion detector switch can be used to replace the normal on-off switch. The light will come on automatically when a person enters the room and shuts itself off a few moments after the person leaves the room.

Other uses could be your entry way inside your home for those times when you enter with your hands full and have to find a place in the dark to set down your load before searching in the dark for a light switch. When you enter a motion lamp will come on automatically, illuminating your way until you can free your hands of their burden.

When you install a motion lamp anywhere inside or outside of your home, it may be a good idea to have it connected to an off switch as well for the times when an automatically activated light is not desired. For example, you are trying to view outside your home at night and you do no want an interior light to come one. Being able to shut down the motion lamp switch would be necessary.
